Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

How do I get a motorcycle learner’s permit in Switzerland?

If you already have a category B (car) license, obtaining a motorcycle learner’s permit is simple:

  • Fill out the required application form: 📄 [Add PDF]
  • Receive your learner’s permit (valid for 4 months)
  • Complete the mandatory motorcycle basic course, which extends the first learner’s permit to 14 months
  • A valid learner’s permit
  • A motorcycle that matches your learner’s permit category
  • Minimum is helmet

The mandatory motorcycle basic course consists of three sessions (each lasting around 4 hours) with a focus on practical riding skills and a bit of theory.

  • Most schools require you to bring your own motorcycle that matches your permit category.
  • Some well-equipped schools offer rentals – check with your chosen school before booking.

You must be experienced enough to ride to the location of the course on your own. No extensive experience is required, but having basic control over a motorcycle or scooter will help you feel more comfortable.

After completing the mandatory basic course, your learner’s permit is extended for to 14 months. You must pass a practical riding test within this time to obtain your full motorcycle license.

If you have a category B (car) license, you can ride an A1 motorcycle (125cc, max 11kW) without passing an exam. However, you must complete a mandatory basic course.
