Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

What does the motorcycle exam look like in Zürich?

The Swiss motorcycle exam lasts 50–60 minutes in total and consists of the following steps:
✔ Initial check: Verification of papers, gear, and motorcycle condition.
✔ Slow riding exercises: Includes straight slow driving, figure-eight, slalom and emergency braking.
✔ Traffic ride: After passing the slow maneuvers, the examiner rides on the back while assessing your road skills (they’ll tell you which way to go by tapping your shoulder).

To take the exam, you must wear full protective gear, including:
✔ Certified helmetMust meet ECE 22.05 or ECE 22.06 safety standards.
Protective clothingYour jacket, pants and gloves need to be certified for motorcyles (look for the little motorcycle logo).
Shoes/Boots – Sturdy, ankle-covering footwear. Hiking boots are also allowed, provided the shoelaces are tucked away.

Many candidates underestimate the difficulty of the exam because it’s easy to get on the street with the learner’s permit. Examiners expect riders to showcase proper control under exam conditions. Fail reason NR1 Slow driving Parkour. NR2 Anticipation. You can book the exam twice by yourself. The third time, you need a education confirmation from a registerd driving school. After failing 3 times, you need to take a driving aptitude test administered by a psychologist. Many people quit at this point. That’s why it’s important to prepare yourself the first time propperly.

Typically, 5 lessons are enough. However, more may be needed if the student has no prior driving experience (e.g. has never driven a car before). The number of lessons depends on knowledge, moto control, kilometers driven and confidence.

✔ The A35 (restricted) and A (unlimited) motorcycle exams follow the same scheme, including:

  • Gear and motorcycle check
  • Slow riding exercises
  • Emergency stop
  • Traffic ride
